Guiseppe Patroni Griffi’s Metti una sera a cena has been high up on my “most wanted”- list for 15 odd years. With a script co-written by Dario Argento and a cast starring Florinda Bolkan, Jean-Louis Trintigant, Lino Capolicchio and Tony Musante, it has always seemed like a must-see.
It took me a long time to source a copy of the film, but I wasn’t keen to see it without any english option, so it wasn't until Merlin from Cult Film Subs Forum kindly agreed to take on my request to subtitle the film that I finally got a chance to see it.
Considering my expectations have been built up for the better part of two decades, it’s difficult not to feel slightly let down. The script (which began life as a stage play) hasn’t aged particularly well since the swinging sixties views of sex and relationships feels a bit dated today.
That’s not say it’s not worth seeing though, it looks great (courtesy of Tonino Delli Colli) and the script works better than it would in the hands of lesser actors.
And who could forget about that fantastic Morricone soundtrack?
